Year 6 Curriculum

In Year 6, children take on exciting topics that prepare them for secondary school. They begin by exploring the inventions and discoveries of the Ancient Mayans, then move on to a detailed study of life in Britain during World War Two, including evacuation, rationing, and the Blitz. Later, they investigate why mountains are so important and finish the year with a science focus on evolution and inheritance, learning how species change over time.

In English, children enjoy a wide range of books such as The Rain Player, Letters from a Lighthouse, Skellig, and The Water Tower. They write in many different styles including historical narratives, flashback stories, journalistic writing, letters, reports, and suspense narratives. Maths builds on all their previous learning with work on fractions, decimals, percentages, ratio, algebra, geometry, statistics, and problem-solving, giving them a strong foundation for Key Stage 3. Science topics include the circulatory system, light, living things and classification, evolution and inheritance, electricity, and environmental change.

Creativity shines through art and design projects, from Mayan prints and WW2 shelters to landscape painting inspired by David Hockney and sculpture influenced by Henry Moore. DT projects include textiles, pulleys and gears, and control technology. In RE, children study Christianity and Sikhism, as well as world views on diversity, science, and belief. Music includes guitar, hip hop, and performance opportunities, while PE covers a wide range of sports, dance, and gymnastics. PSHE focuses on healthy relationships, online safety, wellbeing, money, and making a difference, and computing includes animation, podcasts, programming, green screen video, and interactive AR. French topics include time, holidays, and hobbies.

Overall, the Year 6 curriculum is designed to broaden children’s horizons, challenge their thinking, and help them develop the independence, knowledge, and confidence they need to succeed in secondary school and beyond.
