Year 3 Curriculum
In Year 3, children explore life in the past and how places change over time. They begin by learning about the Stone, Bronze, and Iron Ages, before moving on to the Romans and their impact on Britain and Chester, and later the Anglo-Saxons and Scots. In geography, they study Waverton in detail through local fieldwork and then compare it with Tarragona in Spain, looking at similarities and differences in climate, land, and lifestyle.
In English, children enjoy a wide range of texts such as Stone Age Boy, Escape from Pompeii, and Leon and the Place Between. They practise writing instructions, descriptions, reports, poems, and stories from different cultures. In maths, they build their understanding of place value, calculation, fractions, shape, measurement, and statistics. Science includes hands-on learning about rocks, plants, forces and magnets, light, and the role of skeletons and muscles in animals and humans.
Creative skills are developed through art, sculpture, and printing, as well as design projects like pop-up books, Roman aqueduct models, and healthy cooking. In RE, children learn about Hindu, Christian, and Muslim beliefs and practices. Music includes reggae, glockenspiel, and rap, while PE offers a variety of sports, dance, and gymnastics. PSHE lessons focus on teamwork, resilience, family, and future goals, and computing introduces animation, virtual reality, AI, and film-making. Children also begin learning French, with topics such as greetings, family, and food.
Overall, the Year 3 curriculum helps children become more independent learners, developing curiosity, creativity, and confidence while building key skills across all subjects.
